The Opulent Art Show at The Cutting Garden will feature Sequim and Port Angeles artists of several media including painting, photography, jewelry, glass, mixed media, fiber arts, and music. This special art event is 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to the public. Spend a splendid outing enjoying the gardens, fine wine and treats with live music, and an opportunity to meet local artist selling their wares and sharing their passion for creativity and comradely.

As I drive through the hip, coastal art communities here along the Pacific coast, I often catch a glimpse of that famous bumper sticker proclaiming “Art Saves Lives”! Can it really? I ponder. Why yes! The music in my car stereo attests to this truth as it lifts my soul. The colorful mural I pass boosts up the otherwise ruddiness of the parking lot I pull into. I stop and slip into a gallery on this drizzly, looming afternoon. Dry and quiet now, my surroundings include; an abstract watercolor, a tribal mask and near the window, a teal art-glass vase spilling color up and out and overflowing into the gallery. My world has become a more beautiful place and this is just the perspective from my eyes!

Whether you’re an artist or someone who makes art supplies available to the art community, you are making the world a more beautiful place … and saving lives. How? According to a recent Washington State University article entitled “Why Do We Need Art”, we see that art has been a part of human culture, expression and survival for all of human existence. Ellen Dissanayake, affiliate professor at the UW school of music and author of “What is Art For” says “We don’t have a verb ‘to art’, but what are artists, dancers, poets doing? They’re taking the ordinary and making it special. You create a bowl out of mud by you don’t leave it ordinary, you make it special by engraving a pattern or figures on it. A poet takes ordinary words and makes them special. An artist places an activity or an artifact in a realm different from the everyday.” And artful expression is something that cultures throughout history have needed to survive.

We need art as an avenue to express something in us and we need art in order to make exceptional, something that’s otherwise ordinary in our world. As Pablo Picasso has said “The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.”

In a sense, art saves our lives from stagnation, meaninglessness and the ordinary.

Are you an artist? My guess is that there are times when you feel you must create to live, not because you need to sell something or to create an income (a nice benefit from living in a world that appreciates and understands the need for art) but because creating is living and to live is to create!

A recent Seattle Times photographer viewed a photo collage of mine. Excitedly, he asked me to stand with my piece so he could photograph me with it. “That’s a work of art”! He proclaimed. I got more mileage and “life” out of his appreciation than I do when I sell a print of it. Why? Because even in a tough economy, while some people may perceive art as a “luxury item”, artists will still create, not always because it may stir up income but because we have for thousands of years and like those hip coastal community, car bumper stickers attest; Art Saves Lives!

WHAT: We are hosting an event for interested artisans to give them an opportunity to sell their products, in a beautiful setting. Cost per vendor is $30.00 or $50.

WHERE: The Cutting Garden located at 303 Dahlia Llama Lane, Sequim, Washington.

WHEN: Saturday, September 12, 2009. Hours are 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Set up begins at 7:00 a.m. Sept. 12.

- We are seeking artists to participate in this annual event to showcase and sell your handmade items in a stunningly beautiful location.
- There are 8 x 6 spaces available outside on the covered wrap around farmhouse porch, under a large event canopy, or 10 x 10 personal canopies.
- Food, wine, and musical entertainment will be at the Opulent Art Show.
- Be sure to submit your completed application as soon as possible to guarantee your space at the Annual Opulent Art Show!

Hi everyone, this is my first post as a member of the Olympic Peninsula Etsy team! I run my shop JohnMetBetty, where I sell handmade purses made from new and vintage materials. A few months ago I was invited to participate in the first ever La Befana Bazaar on Bainbridge Island. There are so many talented people participating and I’m really looking forward to it!

Burning Down the House Creative Business Support Group started in February of this year to meet once a month to network, encourage, and gain even more strength in numbers. All the members have creative home based businesses with the mission to cooperate and support the unique issues of pursuit of personal enterprise, develop artistic outlets, and promote the significance of local, handmade art. In the quest for improvement, each month a member or team of members presents a program geared toward small businesses selling to the global and local market. Most of the members of the support group live and sell in Sequim and Port Angeles, however many have an international audience from an active online presence. The name of the support group came from the instigator of the group, Renne Emiko Brock-Richmond, and her love of the Talking Head’s song of that name thinking the lyrics were apt. “No visible means of support and you have not seen nuthin’ yet! Everythings stuck together.”

The Olympic Peninsula Team – Etsy Team contains the members of the creative support team and other artists who live on the Peninsula who also sell their goods on the online Do-It-Yourself sales gallery, Etsy.com.

Delivering creative locally-inspired original songs and rock covers, Mountain Music features local musicians Dan Lieberman and Paul Stehr-Green (of the rock band Rate Limiting Step) on acoustic and bass guitar.

Earlier this year, Dan Lieberman and friends completed recording and released Mountain Music, the album.  The album is a collection of original Olympic Mountain-inspired songs.  Many local students sing on the album, including Dry Creek Elementary and Stevens Middle School Choirs.  More information, including an article about the project and cd release party, appear on the website www.OlympicMountainMusic.com.
